Definition, objective and parameters of winding process

Definition

The process of transferring yarn from small packages like hank, bobbin etc to a large package such as cones, pirns, cheese etc., containing considerable length of yarn is called winding.

Objective of winding / Why winding is done
  1. To empty the bobbin.
  2. To make a continuous supply of yarn
  3. To remove the thick and thin places of yarn
  4. To remove the weak places in yarn
  5. To remove the neps in yarn
  6. To remove knots in yarn
  7. To remove slabs in yarn when it is not required for decoration (not done in case of slab yarn)
The parameters to consider during winding process
  1. Winding plate speed (meter per minutes)
  2. winding diameter (cm)
  3. Traversing velocity (meter per minutes)
  4. Angle of winding (degree)
  5. Package velocity (meter per minutes)
  6. Yarn Tension (N)
Requirements of Winding Machine

The requirements of winding machines means the properties a good winding machine should have. They are
  1. The faults in yarn should be reduced to an acceptable amount by the winding machine
  2. The yarn should not be damaged by the winding machine
  3. The winding process should be carried out at high speed for higher productivity
  4. The knots and splices made by the machine to join the yarns must have sufficient strength and stability
  5. The winding process should be economical
  6. The winding package made by the machine should not be too tight or too loose
