Definition
The process of transferring yarn from small packages like hank, bobbin etc to a large package such as cones, pirns, cheese etc., containing considerable length of yarn is called winding.
Objective of winding / Why winding is done
- To empty the bobbin.
- To make a continuous supply of yarn
- To remove the thick and thin places of yarn
- To remove the weak places in yarn
- To remove the neps in yarn
- To remove knots in yarn
- To remove slabs in yarn when it is not required for decoration (not done in case of slab yarn)
The parameters to consider during winding process
- Winding plate speed (meter per minutes)
- winding diameter (cm)
- Traversing velocity (meter per minutes)
- Angle of winding (degree)
- Package velocity (meter per minutes)
- Yarn Tension (N)
Requirements of Winding Machine
The requirements of winding machines means the properties a good winding machine should have. They are
- The faults in yarn should be reduced to an acceptable amount by the winding machine
- The yarn should not be damaged by the winding machine
- The winding process should be carried out at high speed for higher productivity
- The knots and splices made by the machine to join the yarns must have sufficient strength and stability
- The winding process should be economical
- The winding package made by the machine should not be too tight or too loose
