Today we will discuss about the Types of Textile Fibre
Textile fibers can be broadly classified into two categories, Natural fibers and Man-made fibers
Natural fibers can be sub-divided into 3 categories, Vegetable fibers, Animal fibers, and Fibers from minerals
Vegetable fibers are
- Cotton obtained from cotton plants
- Linen which is obtained from flax stalk
- Jute which is obtained from Jute stalk
- Bamboo
- Hemp
- Ramie
- Sisal
- Pina
The structural composition of all the vegetable fibers are cellulose based
Animal Fibers are
- Wool obtained from sheep
- Silk which is obtained from cocoon of Silkworms
- Hair which is obtained from hair of different animals
The structural composition of all the animal fibers are protein based.
Mineral afibers are fibers asbestos which are obtained from a varieties of rocks.
Man made fibers are fibers which are manufactured by chemical and mechanical processes developed by man. The different types of man made fibers are
Cellulosic based man-made fibers which are made from cotton linters or wood
Example of such fibers are rayon, acetate and tri-acetate
Non-cellulosic polymers which are fibers made of different chemical composition of polymers. Example of such fibers are Nylon, Polyester, acrylic, spandex, aramid etc.
Fibers made from minerals like carbon fibers, glass fibers etc.
